- S.W.A.G. (Awards Gala 2016)
Soroptimist International of Vista and North County handed out over $24,000 in scholarships and grants at its annual Women’s Awards Gala on Saturday evening, February 27, 2016 at Palomar Estates East Clubhouse in San Marcos.
A $3000 cash award went to this year’s “Live Your Dream” award recipient, Vicki Gonzalez. This award is given to a woman overcoming hardship who is a single head of household. Over $11,000 in cash grants went to four local non-profits: Boys & Girls Club of Vista, Welcome Home Ministries, Casa de Amparo, and Leap to Success. In addition, two women pursuing graduate degrees received a $5000 scholarships from The Club’s Charitable Foundation.
The Oscar-themed event included a Red Carpet, Dinner, Music, a Dessert Rush, No Host Bar and Money Bouquet Raffle.

This was a personal project of Dyana Preti, net proceeds will go to our club's Service Fund. It was at ArtBeat on Main Street on Feb. 13. She may have another class, stay tuned for details!

- 10th Annual Human Trafficking Awareness Walk
For Soroptimist International of Vista and North County Inland's 10th Annual Human Trafficking Awareness Walk on Saturday, January 16, 2016, we first rode the Sprinter to Escondido and back to pick up supporters, and then walked downtown from the Wave Waterpark, along Main Street to Vista Way, and back to the Wave. Lots of exposure for our cause. Thanks to all who helped and participated. Let's do it again next January (with bigger signs and a microphone)!

Our program meeting for August featured speakers from San Diego Ovarian Cancer Association. "If I Only Knew Then What I Know Now." Three brave cancer survivors told us their stories and gave us valuable information about how to recognize the signs and symptoms of Ovarian cancer early enough to get the early treatment that is needed for survival. Take-away: If you experience any of the symptoms they mentioned, make sure your doctor doesn't just blow them off as something else, get tested! More info is at http://www.ocaofsd.org/

Our speaker for this Program Meet & Greet at the Spaghetti Factory in San Marcos was Attorney Patricia Andel, who spoke about Wills & Trusts and the differences, and why all women should have a Living Trust, not just a will. Very informative.

For the 2014-2015 year, we will be holding our monthly business meetings at the Conference Room at ServPro of Carlsbad (located in Vista), which is owned by SIV member Eden Weinberger and her husband. On August 11, 2014 we held our annual "Joint Board Meeting" and enjoyed both the new location and the catered food from Rubio's.

Our Guest Speaker was Dana Nuesca of Seeds of Hope Costa Rica, an organization that provides a way out for trafficked girls, and sells jewelry made by them to support their efforts. Also, Jean Cole of United Methodist Church presented a check for $5000 to SIV for our efforts to raise awareness about Human Trafficking.

Our Program Meeting for November 15 at Shadowridge
Country Club was Byron Walls of California Crimefight. He spoke on the subject of Crime Awareness.
Mr. Walls has been speaking on the subject of crime safety since
1980, when he went to work for Citizens Against Crime (CAC) in
Nashville, Tennessee. From 1984 to 1996, Walls was Regional Director of CAC in Portland and Seattle, where he and his consultants spoke to over 20,000 people per year on this important subject.
We also inducted new members Katrina Haycraft and Danielle Taylor. They were sponsored by Eden Weinberger.

Guest Speaker was Amanda Hambly, of the Burn Institute.
The Burn Institute is a nonprofit dedicated to reducing the number of burn injuries and deaths In San Diego and surrounding Counties. Founded in 1972, the Insitute helped establish the UCSD Regional Burn Center. The Institute works to educated children and adults about fire and burn prevention, funds burn research and treatment, and conducts burn survivor support programs that help children and adults cope with the devastating psychological and physical effects of their injury. Eden Weinberger's personal project was a sailing adventure fundraiser complete with appetizers and assorted beverages (including declicious Margaritas made by Mark Weinberger). Let's do it again next year! That was FUN.

- S.T.A.T. Walk 2012
On Saturday, August 25th, Kaye Van Nevel of SI-Vista joined with members of STAT (Soroptimists Together Against Trafficking) for a 5K Justice Walk at Liberty Station, San Diego. The Walk was sponsored by C.A.S.E. (California Against Sexual Exploitation). This active statewide organization circulated petitions and received enough signatures to place Prop. 35 on the November ballot. If passed, this important bill will increase the penalties for perpetrators of sex trafficking. For more information: http://www.caseact.org/. Come election time, Vote YES on Prop 35!
